Healthy Living through Art (HLA) is a free visual arts program for children and youth operating out of the Kingston-Galloway/Orton Park (KGO) neighbourhood improvement area in East Scarborough. It is a collective effort of community members, volunteers, funders, parents and participants working together to enrich the lives of children and youth through arts engagement.
This weekend, we were pleased to welcome back new and familiar faces to our first classes of the year.
Our art teacher, Angeline, helped the Juniors imagine and create puppets out of basic shapes and polygons:
Making puppets and telling stories pushes children to be creative and imaginative. They were able to design their own character. Once a character was created, they developed personalities, experiences and the stories about them. Some were inspired by their design, some were inspired by the movement of the puppets and others imagined a different world for their puppets.
